In 2009, while studying at Northwestern University in Qatar, I helped launch the original Al Fakhoora student campaign as one of four Qatar Foundation students selected to take part. It brought students together in solidarity with Gaza and in support of the right to education.
My contribution
- Co-founded the original student campaign with fellow students.
- Helped organise its telethon and student solidarity activity.
- Served as the campaign’s human-rights representative, a role recorded in Al Jazeera’s launch coverage on 9 January 2009.
This was an early experience of turning a shared concern into organised action: working with peers, communicating a cause and helping students participate.
The Education Above All connection
Al Fakhoora is now a programme of Education Above All Foundation. EAA’s official history traces its origins to 2009 and describes its subsequent work in higher education, scholarships and support for marginalised youth.
